…As NCS Reaffirms Commitment to Media Partnership
The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, has been honoured with the “Media Promoter and Advocate of Press Freedom Award” by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), in recognition of his steadfast support for press freedom and responsible journalism.
The award was presented during the NUJ’s 70th Anniversary Gala and Award Night, held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, on Saturday, June 21, 2025. The event marked a significant milestone in the Union’s history, featuring a keynote address, a commemorative book launch, and awards to distinguished individuals who have contributed to the growth of the media and democratic development in Nigeria.
Presenting the award on behalf of the NUJ Anniversary Committee, the Deputy Governor of Bauchi State, Rt. Hon. Mohammed Jatau, described CGC Adeniyi as a friend of the press whose contributions to transparency and openness in governance remain exemplary.
Receiving the award on behalf of the Comptroller-General, the National Public Relations Officer of Customs, Assistant Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada, expressed gratitude to the NUJ and reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to fostering a vibrant media environment.
“This recognition is a profound honour for the Nigeria Customs Service and a testament to the visionary leadership of CGC Adewale Adeniyi,” said AC Maiwada.

“As a communications professional himself, the CGC understands the critical role of the press in promoting accountability and nation-building. He has championed transparency, empowered Public Relations Officers across commands, and encouraged robust media engagement.”
Maiwada added that under Adeniyi’s leadership, the Customs Service has recorded remarkable progress in proactive information dissemination, stakeholder relations, and institutional transparency, efforts that have significantly enhanced public trust.
“This award is a motivation to do more. We will continue to support journalists, foster transparency, and maintain open communication in line with global best practices,” he said.

Also honoured at the event was retired Customs Comptroller and Kanwan of Katsina, Comptroller UK Bello, who received the Media Support Award for his longstanding dedication to press freedom and professionalism in the Service. Bello, who once served as a Customs Public Relations Officer and later as Area Controller, is widely respected for promoting open communication during his years of service.
In his remarks, Comptroller Bello thanked the NUJ for the honour, which he dedicated to all Customs officers committed to effective communication. He also praised CGC Adeniyi for sustaining institutional reforms that strengthen the Service’s image and credibility.
The recognitions come at a time when the Nigeria Customs Service is undergoing a strategic transformation marked by enhanced digital presence, stakeholder engagement, and alignment with national development goals.
