As Nigeria marks another year of uninterrupted democratic governance, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has extended warm felicitations to citizens across the country in celebration of Democracy Day.
In a press statement signed by the party’s founder, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, the NNPP acknowledged the nation’s democratic strides while calling for unity, peace, and renewed civic engagement to advance the country’s development.
“This year’s celebration is unique,” the statement read, “as it marks yet another milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey. While we are not yet at the ideal destination, we must appreciate the progress so far.”
The party emphasized the importance of setting aside political differences after elections, urging citizens and political actors alike to embrace unity and work together for national progress.
“The political class must understand that elections are temporary divisions. Once concluded, we must all rally behind the government to ensure the delivery of the dividends of democracy,” the statement said.
The NNPP called on Nigerians to use Democracy Day as a moment of reflection to assess how well the nation has harnessed its ethnic, cultural, and religious diversity in nation-building. It also encouraged prayers and support for the country’s leadership, especially in tackling insecurity.
While expressing concern over ongoing violence and killings in parts of the country including Plateau, Benue, Zamfara, Borno, Niger, and others the NNPP called on the federal government to take stronger and more decisive actions to restore security and enable economic activity to thrive. The party commended President Bola Tinubu for what it described as bold leadership, particularly referencing his decision to end the oil subsidy.
“This was a bold move that many before him were not courageous enough to implement,” the party noted. “Now, it’s time to apply that same decisiveness to end insecurity.”
Addressing recent political realignments, the NNPP defended the constitutional right to free association and dismissed fears of Nigeria drifting toward a one-party state. “Movements across political parties are part of democracy and should not be misconstrued,” it stated. “No political party should fear such shifts, but rather focus on strengthening internal structures.”
The statement also cautioned political elites against using media platforms to attack the government, advocating instead for constructive engagement and policy-based collaboration. “Those with access to power should choose dialogue over drama,” Dr. Aniebonam urged.
Commending President Tinubu and his ministers for “showing strong leadership,” the NNPP noted that much more is expected, especially in addressing corruption and insecurity. The party concluded by calling for strict adherence to the rule of law at all levels of government, stressing that the sustainability of democracy depends on the functionality of its institutions.
“All instruments of democracy must be protected and made to work effectively,” the statement concluded. “We believe in a better Nigeria. Happy Democracy Day.”
