The Maritime Reporters’ Association of Nigeria (MARAN) has congratulated the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on his election as Chairman of the World Customs Organization (WCO) Council.
The election, which took place during the concluding session of the 145th/146th WCO Council Meetings on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at the WCO Headquarters in Brussels, was announced by the NCS spokesman, Assistant Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada. The WCO Council serves as the highest global decision-making body in customs administration.
In a congratulatory message, MARAN President, Mr. Godfrey Bivbere, described Adeniyi’s emergence as a “well-deserved global recognition” of his visionary leadership and outstanding contributions to customs administration both in Nigeria and across the continent.
“Under CGC Adeniyi’s reforms, the Nigeria Customs Service has been repositioned as a model institution in Africa,” Bivbere noted. “This is not only a proud moment for Nigeria, but a significant milestone for the African continent and international trade as a whole.”
MARAN commended the CGC for his commitment to customs modernization, transparency, and regional trade integration. The association pledged continued support for initiatives that promote efficiency and sustainability in Nigeria’s maritime and export sectors.
“This development is a testament to CGC Adeniyi’s exceptional leadership and dedication to advancing international trade and customs excellence,” MARAN stated.
The association added that Adeniyi’s elevation to the WCO’s top position further affirms Africa’s growing influence in global trade governance.
“As CGC Adeniyi assumes this important global role, MARAN is confident that his leadership will continue to drive innovation, foster stronger trade ties, and promote economic growth within the region and beyond,” Bivbere said.
