The Lagos Area Office of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has launched an aggressive operation to tackle the buildup of water hyacinth around the Ikorodu axis, in a move aimed at safeguarding boat transportation and other maritime activities in the area.
According to a statement issued on Friday, the operation led by a specially constituted task force is part of NIWA’s proactive measures to prevent the recurring menace of water hyacinth from disrupting navigation and economic activities along Lagos waterways.
The task force, supported by heavy duty equipment such as swamp devils, harvesters, and other specialized machinery, has commenced clearing operations around the Ebute Ikorodu and Ipakodo ferry terminals.
Lagos Area Manager of NIWA, Engr. Sarat Braimah, explained that the deployment was a preventive step to ensure free and safe passage for goods and passengers across the Ikorodu waterways, which are frequently affected by the invasive aquatic weed.
“We have carefully studied the pattern and spread of the water hyacinth phenomenon and have chosen to act swiftly to mitigate its impact before it disrupts boat and ferry operations,” Engr. Braimah said.
She noted that the operation also considers the welfare of local fishing communities, which are often impacted by the weed’s spread.
“Beyond transportation, we are also mindful of the effects on local fishing activities. The earlier we address the problem, the better,” she added.
Engr. Braimah further disclosed that NIWA’s Managing Director, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, has awarded a nationwide contract to address the water hyacinth challenge, underscoring the agency’s commitment to ensuring smooth movement on Nigeria’s inland waterways.
She assured that she would personally oversee the week- long operation to ensure its successful execution by the contractors.
