The Nigerian maritime media space has received a new boost with the official unveiling of the Network of Nigerian Maritime Journalists (NNMJ), a coalition that brings together all existing maritime journalists’ associations under one umbrella.
According to a statement jointly signed by Elder Dele Aderibigbe, Chairman, and Jerry Aguigbo, Public Relations Officer, the NNMJ was established to foster unity, cohesion, and stronger collaboration among maritime journalists while ensuring better engagement with government agencies and critical industry stakeholders.
Membership of the network cuts across all recognized maritime media associations, including the League of Maritime Editors (LEAGUE), Maritime Reporters’ Association of Nigeria (MARAN), Maritime Journalists’ Association of Nigeria (MAJAN), Shipping Correspondents Association of Nigeria (SCAN), Online Media Association of Nigeria (OMAN), and the Congress of Nigerian Maritime Media Practitioners (CONMMEP). Independent maritime journalists not affiliated with any association are also welcome to be part of the coalition.
The group emphasized that its formation became necessary to give maritime journalists a stronger and more respected voice, while also addressing the neglect and marginalization that members of the profession have faced in recent years.
“The coalition is seeking the support of all journalists, government agencies, parastatals, and critical stakeholders in the maritime sector to make this process a success,” the statement read.
It further assured that in due course, the NNMJ will roll out its programmes, aimed at improving coverage of the maritime industry, strengthening professional capacity, and ensuring that maritime journalists are treated with the dignity and recognition they deserve.
The statement concluded with an appreciation to maritime journalists and stakeholders who have supported the coalition so far.
